Houston exteriors take a beating: months of direct sun, near-constant humidity, and heavy rain that keeps surfaces damp. Paint that would last a decade in a dry climate can peel, fade, or grow mildew in a few years here.
Prep matters more than the paint can. Siding and trim should be washed, scraped, and dried, soft or rotted wood replaced, and gaps caulked before the first coat. Paint applied over chalky, dirty, or damp surfaces will fail no matter how expensive it is.
Choose a high-quality 100% acrylic exterior paint with mildew resistance. Lighter colors reflect heat and fade less noticeably, while very dark colors on south- and west-facing walls can cause siding to expand and move.
Timing helps too. Paint in the cooler part of the day, avoid surfaces in direct afternoon sun, and leave enough dry time between coats, especially in humid weather. A well-prepped, well-timed exterior paint job is one of the best-value upgrades for a Houston home.
